Egg donation is a wonderful way to help infertile
couples. The Jones Institute is always searching for potential egg donors
- healthy women between the ages of 21 and 30.
Egg donors complete a 20-page questionnaire
and have a follow-up interview during the initial screening. This is
followed by a complete physical exam and an assessment by a staff psychologist.
All egg donors must have two functioning ovaries, possess good ovarian
function, be non-smokers, and have no evidence of drug use, HIV infection,
or sexually transmitted diseases.
Egg donors undergo daily injections of
a follicle stimulating hormone (
FSH ) to stimulate the ovaries to produce numerous eggs for retrieval.
This typically occurs for ten days but is ultimately determined by the
egg donor's response. Patient response to the medications is monitored
closely by laboratory tests, ultrasound,
and physical examination. The medication
can be conveniently administered at home by subcutaneous injection.
Once the eggs are mature, the egg donor
goes to the hospital where her eggs are retrieved transvaginally under
mild sedation, producing only minor discomfort. The eggs are placed in
a culture dish and exposed to the sperm.
Egg donors are compensated for their time
and inconvenience.
