Sergio Oehninger MD, PhD Medical Director, Jones Institute for Reproductive Medicine Vice Chair, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, EVMS
Dr. Oehninger completed his medical training at the University of the Republic, Uruguay, in 1980. In 1981, he achieved his master of science degree in physiology at Rutgers University in New Jersey. He was intrigued by the complex physiologic events that lead to successful fertilization and pregnancy. He pursued his interests by completing the residency program in obstetrics and gynecology at the University of the Republic, Uruguay, in 1985. He further specialized by completing the fellowship in reproductive medicine and endocrinology at the Jones Institute for Reproductive Medicine, EVMS, in 1988. He is a contributing author to more than 200 original publications in peer - reviewed journals including more then 50 research papers in which he is the primary author. Additionally, he has contributed to more than 230 scientific abstracts and other publications. Most of his research work focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of infertility, fertilization, and implantation. Dr. Oehninger has received eight academic awards including the Fulbright scholarship and a visiting professorship from the University of Stellenbosch, South Africa. He is an active member of the American Fertility Society, the Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology, and many other professional organizations. He is editor of Andrologia ( German peer -
reviewed journal ), Reproduction ( Cambridge peer - reviewed
journal ) and Biology of Reproduction ( USA ). He is former chairman
of the ethics committee ( Institutional Review Board ) at Eastern Virginia
Medical School.
