A. Gitlin, PhD Dr. Gitlin received her PhD from the joint biomedical sciences program through Old Dominion University and Eastern Virginia Medical School. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from Purdue University and a Master of Science degree in reproductive physiology from Texas A&M University. She then assisted in developing and managing the laboratory for the in vitro fertilization program at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. In 1991, she returned to Indiana to establish and direct the IVF lab for Infertility Associates of Indiana. In 1992, she joined the Jones Institute for Reproductive Medicine, EVMS, when the preimplantation genetic diagnosis ( PGD ) program was moving from its final research phase to clinical application. Dr. Gitlin performs genetic diagnosis on the embryos of patients who are at risk for passing inherited diseases to their offspring. In addition, she assists in patient education on the processes involved in PGD. She has presented papers on PGD at national and international meetings and is a member of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology's consortium on Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis, and the Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis International Society. She teaches and serves as a mentor in the Master of Science program in Clinical Embryology and Andrology, a distance education program through EVMS. Her research interests in addition to the PGD program include oocyte and early embryo development.
