![]() Dr. Jones received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Amherst College and his MD degree from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He was awarded honorary degrees by the University of Cordoba, Old Dominion University, Amherst College, University of Madrid, and Eastern Virginia Medical School. He is the recipient of the Medal of the College of France and the Distinguished Service Award of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology; he is an honorary member of more than 20 foreign scientific societies, including the fellowship ad eundem of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. He also is professor emeritus of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine where he served as professor of obstetrics and gynecology, acting chair of the department, and secretary general of the John Hopkins University Program for International Education. He and his wife, Georgeanna Seegar Jones, MD, moved to Norfolk in 1978 to accept the challenge of creating an in vitro fertilization program at Eastern Virginia Medical School. The Jones couple is responsible for the first IVF pregnancy success in the United States. Dr. Jones continues to hold key positions in the development
of ethical standards for reproductive technologies. He is a past chair
of the American Fertility Society Ethics Committee on Reproductive Technology.
He and his wife were the only American gynecologists invited by the Vatican
to participate on a panel to advise the Pope concerning assisted reproduction.
Scientists from as far away as Europe, Africa, Australia, Asia, and South
America have traveled to Norfolk to learn from the Drs. Howard and Georgeanna
Jones and their colleagues. |
